Having an Entertaining Friday Night Without the TV

Share this post with your loved ones

Although undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions ever, the television can get pretty mind-numbing and sometimes, you just want to do something more… well, creative with your time.

Some homes have gas fireplaces in Salt Lake City and no doubt, sitting around the fire, warming yourself while having a good cup of cocoa with loved ones is just as stimulating, if not, than another episode of your favorite TV show. But if you don’t have one, don’t fret. We still have you covered:

Game night

Remember how fun it was as a kid to play Monopoly for hours and hours on end? Well, it’s going to be just as fun even as adults. Dust off your board games and invite your friends over; it’s time to battle. Just as fun are the classics, Scrabble, Pictionary and Charades. If you’ve got only one other person with you, checkers and chess will also do nicely. Prizes, like calling dibs on the pizza flavor, are also a good way to make things more exciting.

Music listening party

Yep, it’s as easy as cranking up your old stereo system and your CD collection. Bonus points if you’ve got vinyl records. As a last resort, Spotify will also do. Take turns playing albums and let yourself go loose in your favorite music. It’s a great chance to talk about artists you like and memories that you associate with certain songs. You get to know your friends or family better as they talk about their own favorites. A nice bottle of wine will greatly enhance the mood.

Rifling through old pictures

This is a great opportunity for families to truly bond while learning more about their family tree and history. There’s something truly heartwarming and wonderful about going through old albums and seeing pictures that you haven’t seen before. Memories will be dug up, good times will be reminisced. This is a fun way to spend time with the people you love most. It’s a good idea to bring out the camera and take pictures of the group on that night as well.

Have a cook-off

Bring out your best recipes and cook together as a group. Assign roles to each one according to their capabilities and watch the fun roll out. Delicious smells will fill the kitchen and senses will be heightened as you chop, handle, and wash various produce and items of different colors and sensations. The best part of the evening will be sitting down and tasting the finished product, of course! Don’t worry if things don’t go as planned; there’s always Chinese food delivery.

Talent night

family gathering

Yes, you read that right. No need to be shy. Everyone’s got some sort of talent rolled up under their sleeve. You can sing, recite an original poem, show off your latest painting, or just talk about why you are fabulous. The shyer members of the group can act as the audience.

There are tons of ideas to make your Friday night fun. Get creative and learn more about yourself and loved ones at the same time. To enjoy yourself at home doesn’t always involve the TV, although, of course, that’s a good idea too.
